Newsie Pty Ltd and its subsidiaries values and respects the privacy of the people we deal with. Newsie Pty Ltd and its subsidiaries is committed to protecting your privacy and complying with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act) and other applicable privacy laws and regulations.

 

This Privacy Policy (Policy) describes how we collect, hold, use and disclose your personal information, and how we maintain the quality and security of your personal information.

“Personal information” means any information or opinion, whether true or not, and whether recorded in a material form or not, about an identified individual or an individual who is reasonably identifiable. In general terms, this includes information or an opinion that personally identifies you either directly (e.g. your name) or indirectly.

 


 

What personal information do we collect?

 

The personal information we collect about you depends on the nature of your dealings with us or what you choose to share with us.

 

The personal information we collect about you may include, but is not limited to:

 

  • name;

  • mailing or street address;

  • date of birth;

  • email address;

  • phone number;

  • IP address;

  • Google account email address (when using Sign in with Google);

  • YouTube channel information (when you connect your YouTube account);

  • Authentication tokens for Google and YouTube services.

 

Information collected from Google Services:

 

When you use Sign in with Google or connect your YouTube account, we receive limited information from Google as described in the "Google Services and OAuth Authentication" section of this policy. This includes your email address for authentication and, if you choose to connect YouTube, authorization tokens to manage your YouTube channel.

You do not have to provide us with your personal information. Where possible, we will give you the option to interact with us anonymously or by using a pseudonym. However, if you choose to deal with us in this way or choose not to provide us with your personal information, we may not be able to provide you with our services or otherwise interact with you.


 

How do we collect your personal information?

We collect your personal information directly from you when you:

 

  • interact with us over the phone;

  • interact with us in person;

  • interact with us online;

  • participate in surveys or questionnaires;

  • attend a Newsie Pty Ltd event, or events held by its subsidiaries;

  • subscribe to our mailing list;

  • apply for a position with us as an employee, contractor or volunteer;

Google Services and OAuth Authentication

Newsie uses Google OAuth 2.0 for authentication and to enable YouTube integration features. We access and use Google user data in accordance with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

When you sign in to Newsie using your Google account, we request access to the following Google user data:

  • **Email address** - Used to identify and authenticate your account

  • **Basic profile information** - Used to personalize your experience​​

Your email address is stored in our database and used to link your Newsie account to your Google identity

  • We do not store your full Google profile information; only your email address is retained in our database

  • Access tokens and identity tokens received from Google are stored in your browser session and included in API requests to authenticate your identity

To enable YouTube publishing features, Newsie requests authorisation to manage your YouTube channel. This integration is optional and only activated when you choose to connect your YouTube account.

Scopes requested:

'https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube` - Manage your YouTube account

How we use this data:

  • Upload videos to your YouTube channel on your behalf

  • Manage video metadata (titles, descriptions, tags) on your YouTube channel

  • Access your YouTube channel information to display connection status

How we store this data:

 

  • YouTube access tokens and refresh tokens are stored encrypted in our secure backend database

  • Token expiry information is stored to manage token refresh automatically

  • No YouTube video content or channel data is permanently stored by Newsie beyond what is necessary to complete your requested actions

 

How long we keep this data:

  • YouTube tokens are retained in our database until you disconnect your YouTube account through the Newsie interface

  • When you disconnect YouTube, all associated tokens are immediately and permanently deleted from our database

  • You can disconnect your YouTube account at any time through your Newsie account settings
     

Third-party access:
 

  • We do not share your YouTube tokens or access with any third parties

  • YouTube integration is handled directly between Newsie's backend services and Google's YouTube API
     

Limited Use Disclosure

 

Newsie's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. This means:

 

  • We only use Google user data for the purposes explicitly disclosed in this Privacy Policy

  • We do not use Google user data for serving advertisements

  • We do not allow humans to read Google user data unless:

    •   We have your explicit consent

    •   It is necessary for security purposes (such as investigating abuse)

    •   It is required to comply with applicable law

  • We do not transfer Google user data to third parties except:

    •   As necessary to provide or improve user-facing features that you have requested

    •   For security purposes

    •   To comply with applicable law

    •   As part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (with notice to you)

How do we use your personal information?

We use personal information for many purposes in connection with our functions and activities, including the following purposes:

 

  • provide you with information or services that you request from us;

  • authenticate your identity when you sign in to Newsie;

  • enable YouTube integration features when you choose to connect your YouTube account;

  • upload and manage video content on your YouTube channel as directed by you;

  • deliver to you a more personalised experience and service offering;

  • improve the quality of the services we offer;

  • internal administrative purposes;

  • marketing and research purposes​​

Disclosure of personal information to third parties

We may disclose your personal information to third parties in accordance with this Policy in circumstances where you would reasonably expect us to disclose your information. For example, we may disclose your personal information to:

 

  • our third party service providers (for example, our IT providers);

  • our marketing providers;

  • our professional services advisors;

  • our content partners;

  • our development partners;

  • Google (for authentication and YouTube API operations when you use these features).

Transfer of personal information overseas

 

Some of the third-party service providers we disclose personal information to may be based in or have servers located outside of Australia, including the United States of America, Europe, Asia and Asia Pacific. 

 

Where we disclose your personal information to third parties overseas, we will take reasonable steps to ensure that data security and appropriate privacy practices are maintained. We will only disclose to overseas third parties if:

 

  • you have given us your consent to disclose personal information to that third party; or

  • we reasonably believe that:

    • the overseas recipient is subject to a law or binding scheme that is, overall, substantially similar to the APPs; and

    • the law or binding scheme can be enforced; or

  • the disclosure is required or authorised by an Australian law or court / tribunal order.


 

How do we protect your personal information?

 

Newsie Pty Ltd and its subsidiaries will take reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information that we hold about you is kept confidential and secure, including by:

 

  • having a robust physical security of our premises and databases / records;

  • taking measures to restrict access to only personnel who need that personal information to effectively

  • provide services to you;

  • having technological measures in place (for example, anti-virus software, fire walls)

Deleting Your Personal Information

You have the right to request deletion of your personal information. To request deletion:

We will process your request within 10 business days
Upon deletion, your account and associated personal information will be permanently removed from our systems

YouTube Connection Data:

 

You can disconnect your YouTube account at any time through your Newsie account settings. When you disconnect:

 

  • All YouTube access tokens and refresh tokens are immediately deleted from our database

  • This does not delete videos already published to your YouTube channel

  • You can reconnect your YouTube account at any time

Google Sign-In Data:

 

If you signed in with Google and wish to revoke Newsie's access to your Google account information:

 

Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your personal information:

Access:

You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.

Correction:

You can request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information.

Deletion:

You can request that we delete your personal information, subject to certain legal obligations that may require us to retain certain information.

Withdraw Consent:

You can withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information at any time, including:

  • Disconnecting your YouTube account (which immediately deletes all stored YouTube tokens)

  • Revoking Newsie's access to your Google account through Google Account settings

  • Closing your Newsie account entirely

 

Data Portability:

You can request a copy of your personal information in a structured, commonly used format.

Newsie Pty Ltd and its subsidiaries website(s) may contain links to websites operated by third parties. If you access a third party website through our website(s), personal information may be collected by that third party website. We make no representations or warranties in relation to the privacy practices of any third party provider or website and we are not responsible for the privacy policies or the content of any third party provider or website. Third party providers / websites are responsible for informing you about their own privacy practices and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

Please allow up to 10 business days for Newsie Pty Ltd and its subsidiaries to respond to your complaint. It will not always be possible to resolve a complaint to everyone’s satisfaction.
